Lyric Storytelling Widget
A downloadable project
This template was created as part of my Let's Make IF initiative exploring Inform 7 programming and storytelling techniques. It is intended to showcase Inform's 7 ability to vary printed text according to complex requirements. Anyone with access to an Inform 7 programming environment can use this template to make their own Inform 7 program. While you need to be comfortable editing text fields, you do not need to write any new code to use this template.
This is source code. You can copy and paste it into a new Inform project and start making stuff right away.
Compatible with Inform 10.1.2
This template allows an author to write four "poems" by populating text tables. The arrows indicate what can be changed.
In addition to instructions and comments in the source code itself, you can read a short write up about making your own content here. Includes steps for removing and adding options or turns.
I'd love to hear from you if you try it! Anything you create with it is yours. You don't even need to credit me! You can see the file for more license info.
Some output examples are provided at the bottom of the source file.
Let's Make IF is a project to help new authors learn Inform 7. Here are topics covered by this initiative:
- Use of "to decide" to dynamically track world state.
- Vary text output according to multiple factors (action, a number value, achievement progress).
- Explore the possibilities of multiple endings in a Inform 7 game.
- Use text formatting techniques to create specific dramatic effects.
- Use the "Undo Output Control" extension to deal with blank or empty inputs.
- Disable unnecessary commands.
What this project will do:
- Make the template publicly available for anyone to use.
- Share source code throughout development.
- Discuss development at my blog, Top Expert.
- Release a longer, full-featured work based on this template in Spring Thing 2025.
What this project will not do:
- Share executable files.
